Downtown Master Plan promotes green space, housing, parking and new commerce

The Downtown Marshalltown Master Plan draft was unveiled to the public Wednesday. The concepts presented are six months in the making, encompassing ways to revamp the area following the July 2018 tornado.

The region spans Third Street to Fifth Avenue and Madison Street to Grant Street/Byron Street/Bromley Street, focusing on commercial, residential, industrial and open spaces.

“The plan is to present the Master Plan at Monday’s city council meeting for final acceptance,” City Housing and Community Development Director Michelle Spohnheimer said. “Whenever an individual project would come forward, those have to be approved if they require city funds, such as streetscaping, public improvements, etc. It would have to be approved by the council, project by project. This Master Plan gives us a guide, especially as we talk to private developers coming in and we have the opportunity to say what our vision is.”

Meet the New Small Business Development Center Regional Director

Marshall Economic Development is pleased to introduce the new Regional Director for the Iowa State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Ames, Dave Biedenbach. In his position, he will be advising and training entrepreneurs and existing business owners in Marshalltown and the Marshall County area. Biedenbach plans to keep regular office hours (currently every other Wednesday) at the offices of Marshall Economic Development (MED) to meet with those wanting his assistance. There is no charge for his consultation.

The business spotlight for this month is Jack’s Pho House located at 10 West Main Street. The restaurant first opened in 2015 and features authentic recipes from Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. Jack’s Pho House meals are made to order with local ingredients. Hours of operation are Tuesday - Saturday.

Darcy Maulsby recently wrote about Jack’s Pho House in her Travel Iowa article, “Experience a World of Flavors in Iowa.” Congratulations to Jack’s Pho House for the recognition of best places to experience ethnic flavors from Iowa's small towns!

Native Marshalltown owner, Wendy Mohler, and family operate the restaurant. In October they announced a discount for all Military, Senior, Marshalltown Police, and Marshalltown Fire Department members as appreciation to the community.
